Defending democracy: Criminalisation of anti-Nuclear protests: An interaction with SP Udaykumar on 7th July

Dr. S P Udayakumar, leader of the massive people’s struggle against the unsafe and eco-destructive Koodankulam nuclear power plant has been named in the recent Report by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) among the individuals hampering India’s economic growth and hence are a threat to India’s national security. Such vilification of the grassroots agitation in Koodankulam is now new. Thousands of innocent local people – fisherfolk, farmers and women – have been facing ridiculous charges of sedition for consistently peacefully opposing the nuclear project which threatens their lives and livelihoods.

While the NPCIL’s dubious claims about safety of Koodankulam have been exposed in the recent accidents, the government is trying to go ahead with agreements with Russia for Reactor No. 3 and 4, with lack of clarity on nuclear liability, environmental clearances, implementation of post-Fukushima safety recommendations and an independent nuclear safety regulator.

We invite you for a press conference at the Press Club of India, Raisina Road New Delhi 110001 at 3.30 pm on Monday, July 7, 2014 where S P Udayakumar and the struggling women from Koodankulam – will speak about the issues raised by the agitation, brutal repression faced by the local people and their demands from the new government at the centre.

We request you to send a representative from your organisation to cover the event and report on the statement.

With warm regards,
Kumar Sundaram
