Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) Lucknow expelled eight Dalit students from the university and an order has been circulated by the administration indicating that they should vacate the hostel immediately. This action has been taken against them in the light of an allegation that they were involved in attacking Professor Kamal Jaiswal (Proctor and Director of Public Relations) and a few other students along with him. But the accused students present the other side of the matter stating that they were attacked by the students who were with the Professor Kamal Jaiswal and were beaten up abused on the ground of their caste. The official statement of the University administration dated 7th September 2016 mentions that these students were involved in attacking Professor Kamal Jaiswal and Dr. R.K. Sahu (A.R.-Store and Purchase); consequently they were to be expelled from the University campus and the hostel on the next day. On the other hand, according to these students, Prof. Kamal Jaiswal has been biased towards the Dalit students since the beginning of his tenure as the Proctor. The expelled students are being threatened by the University administration as they have approached National Commission for Scheduled Castes and other concerned departments of the Union government. Therefore, as a protest against the discriminatory decision, the fellow students have filed a complaint with the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). Yesterday (12th September), they had protest against injustice. Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor of the University promised to meet them on 14th September 2016 and give justice to them. Since incidents of similar nature are occurring on a daily basis which discriminates the Dalit, Adivasi, Other Backward Classes and Minority and other marginalised background students across universities of the country, we Ambedkar University Dalit Student’s Union, BBAU, Lucknow strongly condemn the bramhinical hegemony and caste based prejudices of the administration of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, (BBAU) which not only is an attack towards the students from the marginalized backgrounds but also threatens their very existence in the academic spaces which are largely perceived as ‘inclusive’. Therefore we express our solidarity with the expelled students and their struggle towards achieving social justice in an institution named after Dr. Babasaheb Ramji Ambedkar- our champion of social justice, equality, liberty and freedom. Our Demands: We demand to revoke expulsion of the students on urgent basis and punish the culprits in this matter.
