The illusion of Choice: Politics of Veiling

by Dibyesh Anand

we will give you the choice

veilwe will invoke the sacred
we will bring in culture
we will talk of honour
we will affirm the tradition
we will appeal to you
we will bully you
we will cajole you
we will call you names
we will dictate to you
we will threaten you
we will throw acid on your face
we will ask your father, your husband, your son, your brother to persuade you
we will veil you whether you like it or not
we will veil you whether you want it or not
we will celebrate those who veil by choice
we will force those who do not veil by choice
yes, we will give you the choice to veil
no, we will not give you the choice to unveil
we are patriarchy masking as modesty you see
