Bangladesh arrested the killers of rationalist author Avijit Roy in three days after huge public protests. In India, we never get to know who killed our activists and writers.
Veteran Communist leader, writer-activist Com Govind Pansare, was shot down along with his wife in Maharashtra. He succumbed to bullet injuries on Febraury 20, 2015. Known for his advocacy for workers’ rights, Pansare was also a prolific author with over 20 books to his name. But his most popular book Shivaji Kon Hota? (Who was Shivaji?), that had run into its 38th edition, almost a record by publishing standards, had brought him into eye of storm. In the book, Pansare has pointed out that Shivaji was a secular king who stood out from most of his contemporaries, due to virtues like respect for women, secularism and love for his people, in sharp contrast to the anti-Muslim image of Shivaji Maharaj as created by the Hindu Right-wingers. Pansare had been facing continuous threats from right wing elements.
Dr Narendra Dabholkar, a rationalist and author from Maharashtra, was murdered in a similar fashion by right wing elements on August 20, 2013. Four days after his murder, the Maharashtra Assembly promulgated the pending Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Ordinance. He was awarded the Padma Shri for social work posthumously in 2014. Dabholkar had faced several threats for his works and assaults since 1983 but had rejected police protection. We still don’t know who killed Dr Dabholkar. Not a single person has been arrested or named despite police having CCTV footages.
We have seen no progress in both the cases. Let’s speak up for our own men like Bangladesh did. Lets ask #WhoKilledPansare #WhoKilledDabholkar
