Modi sarkar’s anniversary: one year of simmering communal violence

modi-communal-violence2 June 2014, Pune:Mohsin Sadiq Shaikh, a 24-year-old IT professional, was lynched and killed by a mob after morphed photos of Shivaji and others were circulated on social media. Shaikh had no connection with the said photos or their circulation. Mohsin was wearing a skull cap and sported a beard, while returning from namaz that day, and could be the reason why he was singled out for the violence. Leaders of Hindu Rashtra Sena were arrested for murder.

23 June, Vadodara:
This town witnessed a clash and the police had to burst teargas shells and resort to arrests to control the situation.

July 2014

17 July, Delhi:
A group of around 11 Shiv Sena MPs, furious at not being served Maharashtrian food at the Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi, forced a Muslim catering superviser who was fasting for Ramzan to eat a chapatti. A strike by the IRCTC forced the Resident Commissioner to apologize.


27 July, Bhuj, Gujarat:
Circulation of derogatory remarks on Prophet Mohammad ahead of Eid led to heightened communal tension in the town. Teargas shells had to be fired and 40 people were detained in connection with the incident. (

August 2014

1 August, Idar, Gujarat:
Vandalization of idols in a temple led to tension in the North Gujarat town. (

26 September, Madhya Pradesh:
A church was set on fire in Bhua Bichia in Mandal district.

October 2014
Ahmedabad and Vadodara:
VHP created a hype around cow slaughter and egged the police and local authorities to raid Muslim localities to supposedly crack down on ‘illegal cattle trade’. This was done to coincide with the Bakr-eid festival.

November 2014

30th November, Madhya Pradesh:
Two house churches in Annupur district were attacked

December 2014:

Death threats were issued to Muslim scholars who were to attend the All India Oriental Conference. The letters bore the address of Rashtriya Hindu Sena. (

1 December, Delhi:
A Catholic church was gutted in fire in east Delhi’s Dilshad Garden area.

6 December 2014, Delhi:
Some unidentified people threw stones at Our Lady of Fatima Forane Church at Jasola in south Delhi and broke window panes during the evening Mass.

January 2015

4 January, Delhi:
A minor fire was reported from a church in Rohini in west Delhi.  The Christmas crib outside was charred.

12 January, Bihar: Activists of Bajrang Dal, a Hindu religious group, on Sunday attacked and vandalised a Christian building in Jehanabad district of Bihar and thereafter, blocked the National Highway for some time.

14 January, Delhi:
Our Lady of Graces Church was vandalized at Vikaspuri in west Delhi.

14 Jan, Bharuch, Gujarat:
Three persons were killed and at least ten others were injured in the clashes between two communities in and around Hansot town of Bharuch district today, according to police sources quoted in news stories. The cause of the clashes was a scuffle over catching the kites in Ambeta village during Makarsankranti celebrations.

15 Jan 2015, Jalgaon, Maharashtra:
Tension simmered in Pachora taluka in Jalgaon district after a minor argument between youth of different groups took an ugly turn by the evening of 14th Jan in which six people were injured. Two mosques were said to have been pelted with stones in the Deshmuk area. The fact that the mosques were attacked in the morning hours shows that this was not a spontaneous reaction to the scuffle between individuals but a planned and premeditated attack. Prompt peace initiatives however saved the day.

17th January, Mangaluru in Karnataka:
At least 30 people were injured and property worth lakhs destroyed in clashes between Hindus and Muslims near Mangaluru in Karnataka where over 25,000 Hindutva activists converged for a meeting.

18th January, Muzzafarpur, Bihar:
Three persons were killed as a mob torched nine houses in a village in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar.

29th January, Tamil Nadu:
Dozens of Muslim families in Velloor and Chalappuram are living in fear a week after violent mobs targeted their homes and razed them even as police allegedly remained silent spectators.

March, 2015

15th March, Haryana:
An under-construction church in Kaimri village near here was vandalised by a group and the cross replaced with an idol of Hanuman, triggering tension in the area in Haryana.

15th March, Godhra, Gujarat:
Tension prevailed in the violence-ravaged communally sensitive godhra town on thursday in view of vhp’s shila daan plan in ayodhya on friday with shopkeepers downing shutters and business establishments remaining closed.
