Mumbai Citizens Extend Solidarity to Chetawani Upwas in Bhopal by Narmada oustees

Mumbai | 29th April, 2016: Hundreds of supporters joined hand to express solidarity to the Narmada Bachao Andolan in Mumbai today. Supporters gathered in support of the three days ‘Chetawni Upwas’ being observed by Medha Patkar and the Sardar Sarovar Project affected in Bhopal.

The demands of protesters in Bhopal is to release the recently concluded inquiry commission report on the corruption in the rehabilitation and resettlement of the Sardar Sarovar Project affected persons. Their demands is also to completion of the full rehabilitation of the oustees of the project before the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam is raised to the final height in compliance with the Supreme Court judgment.

The height of the dam is being illegally raised without ensuring full rehabilitation.  2.5 lakh people of 244 villages and 1 township are affected by this project. Lives and livelihood of these people are at stake. Landless are the most vulnerable group. Fertile land-where four crops can be harvested in a year, are being submerged. Ancient temples and mosques are not being spared. Narmada valley which is considered one of the ancient civilizations is in danger today.

Solidarity extended by filmmaker Anand Patwardhan, Prof. Sanjay M.G. from Akshaya Urja, Mukta Srivastava from Shoshit Jan Andolan, Jadgish Khairaliya from Shramik Janta Sangh, activist, Vivek Sundra, Feroze Mithiborwala, Sachin Dubey, expert on waste management Sanju Chandra Kale, Anil Hebbar, Shyam Sonar from Joint Action Committee.

All the supporters resolved to strengthen support for Narmada Bachao Andolan which is fighting its final battle to save the valley and its people.
